Hanmer Springs WWTP Upgrade
Category: Drainage
Hurunui District Council operates the pond-based wastewater treatment plant of Hanmer Springs. Civil Construction's services were required for the upgrade for the increase of the plant's hydraulic & processing capacity.
The works were for the installation of new outlet structures and pipework in Ponds 3, 4 and 5 and the modification of outlets and pipework in Ponds 1 and 2. It also included the installation of flow directing floating curtains into Ponds 3 and 4.
Challenges included working in a live wastewaste treatment plant while carrying out the upgrades, lack of previous asbuilt information which involved CCL putting forward ideas for de-design that met specifications & cost constraints. Stormwater infiltration to the foul sewer network after the Kaikoura earthquake.

The work was reasonably challenging due to the lack of existing as-built information, the high inflows that needed to be catered for after rain and the work being carried out in winter when ground conditions were wet.
Civil Construction completed this work to a high standard. I would be happy to work with them again on future construction projects.
